Free Choices Save Lives

From the inbox:
Mother's Day is just around the corner (May 14th). Here is a very meaningful way to show the special women in your life how much you love and appreciate them.

You can honor the special women in your life by taking a simple action to help empower women around the world.

It's easy - click here to urge Congress to increase funding for international family planning programs.

Right now family planning programs prevent 105 million abortions (many of them unsafe) and nearly 3 million infant deaths worldwide every year. Better funding could save even more women's lives and ensure more healthy births.

Unfortunately, these crucial programs have been consistently under-funded by the U.S. government. Worse yet, President Bush has proposed a huge budget cut for international family planning - 18% less than the current low level of funding!

Congress will be deciding how much to invest in international family planning in the next few weeks.

This Mother's Day, please honor and celebrate womanhood* by taking a simple yet meaningful action to help empower women around the world.

The Bush Administration's failure to fund international family planning programs will have grave consequences for the health and well-being of women, children and communities around the globe for generations to come.

* "Celebrate womanhood"? I don't know about that, but this is still important.
